FINANCE COMMITTEE
Frans Peters, The Netherlands (Finance Chair)
ParCo 99 is organised by the non-profit foundation ParCo Conferences in co-operation with the Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands.
WELCOME TO ParCo99
The international conference ParCo99 will be held during the last few months of the century during which the first electronic parallel computers were developed. The next millennium will see the increased use of parallel computing technologies at al levels of main stream computing. The majority of computer hardware will use these technologies to achieve higher compute speeds, high speed access to very large distributed databases and greater flexibility through heterogeneous computing. These developments will result in the extended use of all types of parallel computers in virtually all areas of human endeavour. Compute-intensive problems in emerging areas such as financial modelling and multimedia systems will, in addition to traditional application areas of parallel computing, such as scientific computing, stimulate this development. Parallel computing as a field of scientific research and development will change from a niche position concentrating on solving compute-intensive scientific and engineering problems to becoming one of the fundamental computing technologies.
The conference aims to give a retrospective view of what has been achieved in the parallel computing field and also give a prospective view of future developments. In this the application aspects of parallel computing are given a special position. This is reflected in the themes of the invited talks.
The conference organisers planned the conference such that you will have many opportunities to meet with fellow researchers. We do hope that you will participate in the scientific activities, the industrial session and will use the social activities to make new, and renew old, contacts. The informal nature of the conference allows for easy interaction with fellow delegates.
Please feel free to contact any member of the Conference Committee if you have questions or need assistance.
PROGRAM
The program consists of invited and contributed papers - which will be presented in classic or interactive form - as well as an industrial session. The papers selected highlight a wide range of aspects pertaining to, for example, applications of parallel computers, software development methods and tools, numerical and non-numerical algorithms, architectures and performance analysis.

Guided tour of Delft: Tuesday August 17.
On tuesday 17th august a guided tour of Delft is available. Between 17:30 and 18:00 participants walk to the tourist office, Markt 83-85; to get there, use the map in your conference bag or follow a participant who knowes his/her way around. Some English speaking guides will be waiting for you at the tourist office to show you the city and tell you something about its history and interesting places. The tour will take about an hour.
The guided tour brings you back to the tourist office. From there, you are on you own.
Conference dinner: Thursday, August 19.
The conference dinner will be at the "Kurhaus Hotel" Scheveningen. The dinner itself is in the main hall and it is a buffet. Participants will be seated by Kurhaus staff and subsequently take from the buffet whatever they want.
A limited selection of drinks is available; anything beyond this has to be paid for by the person placing the order.
It is worthwhile to take a walk around the hotel and along the beach before going back to your own hotel.
Participants go together to Scheveningen by tram; two tramcars have been hired by the conference for this purpose. For the way back participants receive tickets for the tram ride, but the journey is on an individual basis.
Tickets
Dependent on the type of your registration, tickets for the conference dinner have been made available to you during registration. Take your ticket(s) with you, as it (they) will be collected by ParCo staff before you may enter the dining area.
Schedule
Please note the changed timing of the afternoon sessions of thursday august 12th; the conference schedule has been slightly compressed to leave sufficient time to reach the tramstop. In particular, Interactive Session II is scheduled 15:00 - 16:30; between 16:30 and 17:10 participants proceed to the tramstop.
Departure: tramstop Delft CS (Central Station) 17:15. We must be at the stop at 17:10 and board the car as quickly as possible and immediately as it arrives; these cars cannot wait, there is only a small time-slot available for them.
Demonstrations: Wednesday, August 18.
On wednesday august 18th there is the industrial session. During wednesday there will also be demonstrations from HP, SGI and HPaC (TU Delft) in committee room 3 (dutch: commissiekamer 3), marked X on your ground-plan.
On wednesday HPaC also offers demonstrations of their virtual reality workbench. These demonstrations are organized in small groups of 5 persons and they take about 20 minutes. There is a demonstration every half hour, the first one starting at 10am, the final one starts at 3:30pm. These demonstrations take place in the building of the physics department, immediately neighbouring the auditorium. For every scheduled demonstration there will be a person at the registration desk to show you the way.
To participate, you must sign-up a list; this can be done at the registration desk.
Library services
The library is located behind the auditorium. Participants may use the PC's in the library to read mail and such activities requiring only ftp, telnet or a browser; on the condition of course that this doesn't interfere with the normal operation of the library.
The building is worth looking at. The library also offers a guided tour taking 30 - 45 minutes. Tours will be available on wednesday 12th august (two groups, at 3pm and 4pm) and thursday 13th august (one group, at 3pm) for groups of 7 to 10 persons. To participate, you have to sign up a list; this can be done at the registration desk. For every scheduled tour there will be a person at the registration desk to show you the way.
